Q & A for Speaker Sabrina Monarch

I first learned about astrology at eight years old, and began to read books and search the internet about it when I was twelve or so. I started reading charts for people when I was eighteen, but feel like I really deepened into my understanding and practice when I was twenty-one. I had an extreme spiritual awakening experience at that age. The spiritual awakening escalated to a kind of mania, and at that time I did not have sufficient mental frameworks or proper mentorship to really handle that. This resulted in being taken out of college (by my parents who were financially supporting me) and having to move back home and see a psychiatrist to in a sense earn my freedom back with an ok from the doctor. I never believed in the diagnosis, instead feeling that I had made severe errors in judgement but could learn how to balance myself. It was a very difficult time, and I dove deeply into Evolutionary Astrology, while faking my way through psychiatric treatment. At that point, nothing I said about my truth, or spirituality or magic helped my case, but actually made things worse, so I just said what I felt the doctor wanted me to say. I dove into astrology privately. Astrological concepts were a lifeline for me to stay in touch with my spirit and not become completely overrun by the disempowering narratives around me. When I got to go back to college, I took an Evolutionary Astrology course in town from Ari Moshe, and was able to make sense of what had happened, take deeper accountability for my shadow and how I had helped to create the situation, and learn how to wield my personal power and better understand the boundaries of this reality. My family relationships healed profoundly, as well (people tend to ask)!

So in short, what brought me to astrology at a deeper level was a necessity of understanding not just who I am, but how to be myself and how to participate in life in more skillful ways. I feel that Evolutionary Astrology is a wisdom school that helps me do that and now is something I get to share with others.

I practice astrology because I don’t want to do anything else! I just love it so much, and have loved the adventure of building a career out of it. During the spiritual awakening I mentioned, I started to see these little bursts of light that look like stars, that pop into my field of vision or on the page to validate resonance. These lights appeared rarely at first, but now I see hundreds or thousands of them a day. Astrology is juicy for me because I see literal stars everywhere, that help me attune my consciousness. I collaborate with the lights in all my astrological work (writing, client sessions, etc).

I also really love teaching astrology in my Evolutionary Astrology Intensive that I’ve been running since 2017. I love the groups that assemble, and it brings me so much joy to watch people develop astrologically in community.

I think about Saturn-Pluto a lot because of the current conjunction. I think it’s important to tune into because all planetary energies are multivalent (I get the term from Richard Tarnas), meaning the archetypes can play out across a vast spectrum of possibility. With Saturn-Pluto, I like the idea of people (myself included) becoming more responsible for their shadow, instead of projecting it out onto some enemy. It’s alchemical. I think it is also such a potent time for deep, transformative work, and transforming hidden structures in the psyche. I think a lot about mindset and beliefs, and how these inform our reality. I work with a coach who has taught me to acknowledge “thought filaments” which are the tiny, almost invisible thought-forms that we overlook or don’t take the time to unpack. It’s incredible to unpack how thoughts turn into feelings, and feelings turn into actions, and actions turn into results. This time period has awakened me to uncovering cause and effect (Saturn) at such a deeper level (Pluto).

Astrology is getting more and more popular, and youth have access to more learning resources than ever it seems! I started pretty young, but I’m in awe of the astrologers younger than me and how far they are in their practice at only eighteen!

I actually haven’t thought that much about astrology in the future. With increasing education and gateway experiences to astrology (now beyond the newspaper horoscope, with plenty more horoscope sources and pop astrology sources), there are also more opportunities for people to take astrology deeper. I think that there is room for so many specialty practitioners, and astrologers really finding their niche. I think astrologers have always done this, but more niches are being invented now.

Rick Tarnas said at NORWAC one year that astrology can be enriched by being combined with other disciplines – and other disciplines are also enriched by astrology. That always stuck with me. As more people are interested in astrology, I’m curious to see what interdisciplinary innovations will emerge.
